LA QUINTA — November 3, 2026. La Quinta says California’s standardized waste-cart colors are gray for landfill refuse, blue for recycling and green for organic waste, but existing containers can remain in use during a transition.
Not everyone gets a new cart immediately
The city says Burrtec replaces and relabels containers as older units reach the end of their useful life. The state compliance window in the city’s FAQ extends to January 2036.
A damaged cart is a different situation
Residents with broken wheels, cracked barrels or missing lids can contact the hauler, who may relabel an existing container or issue a compliant replacement depending on the cart’s condition.
Sorting matters more than appearance
An older burgundy or dark-red cart should not be interpreted as an authorization to mix recyclable and hazardous material into regular garbage. Follow the actual label and city materials guide, or call 760-340-2113.
